Hurley, NY

Hurley's Main Street is one of the best-kept secrets in the county—a row of Dutch stone houses dating back over 300 years, so well preserved it's a National Historic Landmark, and for a few months in 1777 it was actually the capital of New York State while Kingston recovered from being burned by the British. The rest of the town spreads out toward the Catskills, with West Hurley and Glenford sitting along the north shore of the Ashokan Reservoir, where the Maverick Concert Hall has hosted chamber music every summer for over a century. It's the kind of place that feels quietly historic rather than performed, close enough to Kingston to make errands easy, but with a sense of depth most towns its size don't have.
