Shandaken, NY

Shandaken, NY

Shandaken is Catskills through and through: twelve hamlets scattered across 53,000 acres of forest, with the Esopus Creek running the length of it and Slide Mountain, the highest peak in the range, rising up in the Big Indian Valley. Phoenicia is the heart of it, once a stop on the Ulster and Delaware Railroad and now known for its diner and its summer festival, while Pine Hill sits at the base of Belleayre Mountain and smaller hamlets like Big Indian, Mount Tremper, and Chichester each hold onto their own piece of the town's history. This has been a retreat for generations. Tourists came for the boarding houses in the 1800s, and people still come today for the same reason: mountains, water, and a kind of quiet that's hard to manufacture anywhere closer to the city.
